Traditions

One of our family traditions is to have a 1/2 birthday for our boys in the summer. Since both of our boys have late December birthdays...Peter's is December 28th and Liam's is December 30th, we want to make sure that their birthdays never get combined with Christmas and forgotten. This helps us make sure that they aren't getting one gift for Christmas and birthday combined.

Growing up my birthday was always a special day for me. When I was growing up my parents would always say that on your birthday everyone had to be nice to you. I always felt like it was a day centered on me and I LOVED celebrating my birthday. (I still do!!!)

I really want my boys to have the same experience. But the holidays get hectic and their friends from school are gone and not able to come to parties, so by moving their "celebration" they get to have a party with friends and get treated special for a whole day. Actually, in a way they are lucky because they still get cake and one present on their actual birthday and then later in the year they get to have a party and more cake and more presents.

Peter had his birthday celebration this last weekend and had a couple friends come for a sleepover. They ended up staying up until 2am and were up by 7am, but they seemed to have a good time. Peter got Legos, Pokemon cards, and a few clothes and was elated. I made him a homemade chocolate cake with homemade chocolate frosting. It tasted pretty darn good too!!!

This is a great idea. We may end up doing that with E too, once she is a bit older. Right now she doesn't really understand the whole deal. But you are right...those birthdays in the month of December really do have a tendency to get pushed to the side. We celebrate as a family and it's still a special day...but we are usually more stressed...just because of all the "other" things going on.

Looks like Peter enjoyed the day! I still can't believe he is going to be 9 soon! Yikes..where has the time gone?!

I always thought that was a great idea that you guys did. I love it. It's such a special way to celebrate them. Go Julie!

I've been thinking that we will do a "date night" with the opposite sex parent on half birthdays (once they understand what that is, maybe this year for Brenna) - just to make a special tradition too.
